A labor of love
I have wanted to write a book since I was 10 years old and many things over the years have triggered my creative energy, but it was my experience over the summer of 2019 that drove me to write a book...
This past summer I travelled across British Columbia to 12 different areas of our province to talk about the hard stuff in our communities around safety for Indigenous Women & Girls. We talked about the silence, incest, abuse, patriarchy, alcoholism and drugs and perpetrators within our own families that continue to stay in communities. These were really hard conversations to have and not many people know how to hold space like that for groups of individuals who may have their own stories. I utilized Indigenous knowledge and ceremony to lead the discussions and create an action plan. When we were done the participants felt heard and had a sense of ownership of the work they did.
When we completed this work, people asked me, “How did you create safe space? How do we support healing? How do we build our capacity to have these kinds of conversations? Not just with others but with ourselves and our own families?
This experience drove me to write this book, because I felt a sense of responsibility.
“Calling My Spirit Back” shares my background and lived experience, it talks about the various types of trauma I endured and also shares the tools I utilized to work through the hard stuff in my own life in order for me to live my best life.
My purpose is to gather and share the knowledge of our ancestors to promote healing for the mind, body and spirit.
